He was born on December 13, 1887 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. On his death certificate, it shows his birth date as October 16, 1887, but on his WWI draft registration, his birth date is listed as December 13, 1887.

Leo had the following sibling: Henry Barca (1886-1961) who was born on August 18, 1886.

They appear in the 1900 US Census under the name "Barcon", living in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. His mother is a widow. Leo never married or fathered any children. Both he and his brother worked at a hat makers and Leo worked as a "whittler" according to his death certificate.
