Deacon Leo Abernathy, Sr.

Deacon Leo Abernathy Sr., 83, of Toney, Alabama, died September 5, 2012, at home surrounded by family and friends.

He was born August 30, 1929, in Madison County, Alabama, the son of late Maggie Pearson Abernathy and Van Abernathy. He was the second oldest of 10 siblings. On September 16, 1956, he was happily married to Pauline Turner Abernathy who survives, in Toney, Alabama.

Leo Abernathy Sr. grew up in Madison County, Alabama within the community area. His primary education was achieved in the public school system of Madison County, but he enlisted in the United States Air Force; that was one instance of God's plan able him to travel several places in the World. Honorably discharged in 1963, he was later employed by TVA for many years, where he retired. Leo Abernathy, Sr. accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior then joined the Beaver Dam P.B. Church in Toney, AL. and brought joy to everyone that was blessed to be in his presence. He "Fought a good fight, he finished his course, and kept the faith." He was ordained as Deacon of Beaver Dam P.B. Church appointed on May 3, 1980.

Deacon Leo Abernathy was preceded in death by his two sons, Paul Abernathy and Vandy Abernathy, whom he dearly loved.

He is survived by his wife, Pauline Turner Abernathy, three sons and a daughter: son, Leo Abernathy Jr. of Huntsville, Alabama, son and daughter-in-law, Cecil and Dalphne Abernathy of Madison, Alabama, and son, George Abernathy of Huntsville, Alabama; one daughter, Matilda Abernathy, of Huntsville, Alabama; four loving grandchildren: Alonzo Abernathy, Briana Abernathy, Tamika Moore and Antwon Moore; four precious great-grandchildren: Candance Abernathy, La'Davious Summers, Paris Woullard and Landon Moore all of Huntsville, Alabama; two brothers, John (Helen) Abernathy of Huntsville, Alabama and Theodore (Ella Dee) Abernathy of Chattanooga, Tennessee; three sisters, Mattie Moore of Harvest, Alabama, Olean Abernathy, Mary June Jordan both of Huntsville, Alabama; four sisters-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews, and close friends.

Funeral service will be 12:00 Noon on Sunday, September 9, 2012 at the Beaver Dam Primitive Baptist Church (785 Beaver Dam Road; Toney, Alabama 35773) with Pastor Theodore Bone officiating. Interment will be in the Valhalla Memory Gardens. Deacon Abernathy will lie in repose one hour prior to funeral time.

Public viewing will be from 11:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 8, 2012; and from 8:30 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 9, 2012 at the Royal Funeral Home.
