Mrs. Fran H. Brown, executive secretary of the Family and Children's Service of Ithaca, died early today, Feb. 19, 1958, of a heart attack at the home of Dr. C. Stewart Wallace and Mrs. Wallace, 317 N. Aurora St.

She had been unable to reach her home at 110 Heights Ct. Tuesday and had spent the night at the Wallace home.

She was born Bertha Buckley in Methuen, Mass. Her first experience as a social worker was as a resident at Ruggles St. Settlement House in Boston.

She then attended Drexel Institute, Philadelphia, where she majored in homemaking and social work. She taught homemaking for two years in the high school at Chester, Pa., and then worked at Sleighton Farms, Pennsylvania, a school of correction for girls.

Later she was a social worker at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital and then returned to Boston as placement officer of the Florence Crittenden Home for Girls.

She came to Ithaca in 1930 as assistant to Miss Margaret P. Scott, executive secretary of the former Family Welfare Society now the Family and Children's Service. In January 1935 she was appointed executive secretary to succeed Miss Scott.

After her husband's death in 1941 she attended the Graduate School for Social Workers at Simmons College, Boston and returned to Ithaca to resume her work.

In February 1955 an anniversary dinner was held by the Family Society in her honor at Willard Straight Hall. The Society's president, Olaf F. Larson, past presidents and members paid tribute to her many years of service in Ithaca and her accomplishments in the field of social work.

She has been a member of the Regional Committee of the Family Service Assn. of America on several occasions. She was also a member of the Country Club of Ithaca.

She is survived by a daughter, Miss Joanne Coffin Brown, a sophomore at Cornell University, two sisters and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Henry Abt of New York City.
