Hall of Fame Professional Football Player. Born in Fowler, Colorado, he was an All-American quarterback from Colorado College when he was signed to the Portsmouth Spartans in 1931. For seven seasons, he played with the Portsmouth Spartans (1931-32) and Detroit Lions (1934-38). With the Detroit Lions he was a six-time All-Pro, three-time league scoring leader and led the Lions to an NFL championship in 1935. He later became athletic director and a coach at the University of Detroit. In 1951, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1963. His number 7 uniform was also retired by the Detroit Lions. He died at age 71 in Canon City, Colorado.
