Chase Cameron Brauda, age 14, won his battle over acute myeloid leukemia on Sunday, September 2, 2012. Diagnosed with AML in December 2011, Chase moved into Wolfson Children's Hospital to undergo an intensive treatment, which included three months of chemotherapy followed by a bone marrow transplant in April 2012. Chase was honored to have his sister donate her own bone marrow. As a result, Chase was able to spend the entire summer at home with his family and friends. With a diagnosis of relapse in August, Chase bravely began a second journey against leukemia.
Born in Waycross, Georgia on June 23, 1998, Chase lived his entire life in Pierce County. Currently a freshman at Pierce County High School, he was enrolled in the honors classes. Chase enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, playing online video games, reading books, engaging in air soft wars, and collecting knives. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Blackshear.
Though stricken with cancer, Chase never lost his sense of humor or his love for people. Living in a hospital for most of an eight month period undergoing intensive chemotherapy is unimaginable for most, but Chase exemplified courage, bravery, and class beyond his years. Doctors and nurses often remarked about how polite and well mannered Chase would be under the most challenging of circumstances. The floor of Wolfson 5 became a home away from home as doctors, nurses, and staff became more and more like family. Chase had made plans to give back to the hospital in order to be there for other children facing cancer.
Chase is preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, David B. Shields, Sr. Survivors include his parents, Chad and Susan Brauda of Blackshear; a sister, Morgan Brauda of Blackshear; his maternal grandmother, Diane Shields of Waycross; his paternal
grandfather, Ervin Brauda (wife Janice); his paternal grandmother, Sandra Davis (husband Adolph); uncles and aunts, David and Sophie Shields of Waycross, Greg and Melissa Shields of Waycross, Brian and Joni Rowe of Hahira, Deana Aldridge of Blackshear, and Leslie Brauda of Waycross. Cousins include Trey Shields, Jessica Shields, Sydney Shields, Kalen Barber (husband David), Zoey Vaught, Gage Vaught, Seth Beale, and April Dixon (husband Dave). A number of other extended relatives also survive.
Visitation for Chase will be held at Emmanuel Baptist Church on Wednesday, September 5 from 6:00 – 9:00. Funeral services will also be held at Emmanuel Baptist Church Thursday, September 6 at 4:00. Interment will be in Waters Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers will be the freshmen class of Pierce County High School. Please meet at the church at 3:30.
