William E. Backstrom, 75, of Collinsburg, West Newton, died Wednesday, July 25, 2007, in Excela Health Westmoreland Regional Hospital. Born April 20, 1932, in Collinsburg, he was the son of the late William E. Sr. and Ada "Betty" (Bryner) Backstrom.

Mr. Backstrom was retired, having worked at the Mathies Mine, the Barna Machine Shop in Duquesne and the Fort Pitt Foundry in McKeesport. He was Protestant by faith and was a member of the United Mine Workers of America. He was also a former member of the Collinsburg Fire Company and the Rostraver Township Recreation Board. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict; he was a corporal in the 11th Airborne Division of heavy weapon infantry.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth E. (Skurka) Backstrom; son and daughter-in-law, Roger J. and Louisa (Alvarez) Backstrom, of Bailey, Colo.; daughter, Pamela R. Backstrom, of Silver Spring, Md.; sister, Joanne Pierce, of Collinsburg, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Backstrom and Russell Backstrom, and two sisters, Olga "Sis" Dennick and Viola Dubinshak.

Family and friends are welcome to attend a funeral service at 10 a.m. Saturday in the JAMES C. STUMP FUNERAL HOME INC., 580 Circle Drive, Belle Vernon, Rostraver Township, 724-929-7934, www.jamesstumpfuneralhome.com, with the Rev. Wayne Crise officiating.

Interment will follow in West Newton Cemetery.
