John Clinch married Mary Hephzibah "Effie" Manock on February 7, 1872 in the Texas Station (Wrigley) Methodist Episcopal Church, Rosefield Township, Peoria County, Illinois. He was elected Mayor of Elmwood, Illinois from 1897 to 1909, and again from 1911 to 1915. John Clinch was appointed Postmaster for Elmwood, Illinois on March 13, 1899 by President William McKinley.

FORMER MAYOR OF ELMWOOD CALLED

Elmwood, IL, June 21 - John Clinch, three time mayor of this city, former postmaster and for many years treasurer of schools of Elmwood township, died suddenly here Sunday following an attack of heart disease. He was born in Kent County, England, July 26, 1849.

Deceased is survived by his wife, one son, Charles, of Macomb, IL, and one daughter, Carrie, of this city. Funeral services were held from the late residence Wednesday, Rev. B.Y. George officiating.
