He was conscripted into Confederate service on July 20th, 1862, at Columbia, South Carolina, at the age of 16, and was mustered into service as a Private in Company M of the Palmetto Sharpshooters Regiment, South Carolina, Volunteers. He served with the regiment in Virginia, Maryland, Georgia, and Tennessee, before becoming ill and was sent to a Confederate Hospital in Lynchburg, where he died of disease on January 28th, 1864.
