Mary was born in the Villa D'Elci, where her parents, William Preston Griffin and Mary Neill Lawrence Griffin stayed during her mother's confinement. Her father was touring Europe as part of his U.S. Navy duties. Her mother died in childbirth, and Mary was raised by her maternal grandmother, Julia Lawrence. She married William Redmond, Jr and lived in Newport, Rhode Island, inheriting her grandmother's house there. She gave birth to two children, Julia Lawrence Redmond (1869-1875), who died of diptheria, and William Preston Redmond (1873-1938). Mary died of tuberculosis at the age of 44.
