22-year-old John Martin enlisted Jan. 23, 1862 in Carrollton, Ill. He was 5’7” tall with brown hair, hazel eyes and a light complexion. He joined a regiment being formed by their father’s commander in the Mexican War, Colonel Jacob Fry. He served in the Illinois 61st Infantry, Co. C. and mustered in on Feb. 5, 1862 at Benton Barracks in Missouri.

He died of disease in the regimental hospital at Synders Bluff on July 25, 1863.
