The 37th Iowa Infantry was nicknamed "The Greybeard Regiment". It was the only regiment of its kind ever recruited in the United States. it was made up of men over the enlistment age, which at that time was 45. Its purpose was to gaurd prisons and arsenals in order to free young men for active combat duty.
The Regiment guarded the Pacific Railroad from St. Louis to Jefferson City, Mo. May-July 1863. They guarded military prisons until Jan. 1863. The Greybeards helped repulse a surprise attack on the City of Memphis by Nathan Bedford Forrest on Aug. 31, 1864, coming to the aid of the 8th Iowa.
The 37th then guarded military prisons at Cincinnati, Columbus and Gallipolis, OH. until muster out.
