Age 31 yrs. Murdered for gold. Pioneer cattleman.
Charles Coddington is the son of James Coddington 1788-1873 and Anna Cutter 1793-1859 of New Jersey. Charles was born in 1822, in Rahway, Union County, New Jersey – that is where most of his nine siblings were born, including his older brother William, who arranged for the burial of our Charles in the Angels Camp Old Protestant Cemetery and wrote the dedication for his headstone:
"To The Memory of My Brother Chs Coddington Died Oct 23rd 1853 Aged 31 Yrs".
William, the elder brother, was born February 21, 1820 in Rahway, New Jersey, and passed January 21, 1888 at age 67 in San Francisco. William at age 32 came to Angels Camp from New Jersey to mine for gold; he was single and lived alone in Angels Camp according to the 1852 California census. Brother Charles possibly came to California to join his older brother after 1852, but then died due to disease or an accident soon after arriving. Charles Coddington is not listed in the 1852 California census, although he may have arrived here at that time.
In the 1850 New York County, New York census, Charles Coddington age 26 is living with his parents who operate a livery-stable business. Charles and his wife Mary Ann 'Ackerson' Coddington age 25 are also helping in the business and they have three daughters, Anna 7, Sarah 5, Mary 2.
Thus illustrates a common theme of successful men with family that are lured to the California gold country to seek greater fortune, never to return home. The elder brother, William went on to marry in Angels Camp, have children and move to San Francisco. William invested in real estate, prospered and contributed to several San Francisco community services. William, his wife Petra (1833-1873) and their sons James (1852-1911) and Carlos (1854-1870) are located at Altaville Catholic Cemetery in Angles Camp. William is FG memorial #67112820. The memorial stone for Charles Coddington still stands in Angles Camp and the rest of his story must be told. He parted this world at age 31 and we know not why. Allen Rountree #47073491
