PHM2 US NAVY WORLD WAR II

Rae Adelaide Ackerman, 93, of Daytona Beach Shores passed away on May 5th at Port Orange Hospice to be with the Lord. Rae was born in Brooklyn, New York on February 11th, 1918. During WWII she worked on B-17 bombers at the Boeing plant in Burbank, CA. Rae then left her job at the defense plant to join the Navy and become a WAVE. She was a pharmacist mate second class and drove ambulance picking up the wounded soldiers at the Navy docks. Rae then got stationed in Hawaii. After the war Rae got married to Herb and they settled in Paramus, NJ. There she enjoyed being a housewife and raised her two daughters, Liane and Leslie. In 1964, Rae moved to Pompano Beach, FL where she enjoyed many years as an avid tennis player. In 1984, she moved to Daytona Beach and resided in Pelican Bay where she enjoyed many years playing golf. In December of 1995, she moved to Daytona Beach Shore. Rae worked for Weight Watchers for many years and was president of the 49's of Daytona Beach Golf Club for 2 years. She was also president of the WAVES National for 2 years and in 2010 she flew to Washington DC. with the Honor Air of Volusia County. She was also an avid reader and enjoyed snow skiing in her younger years. Rae is preceded in death by her daughter, Liane Rae Adams and sister, Lois Peddler and her brother, Henry Carlsen. She is survived by her husband, Irving "Herb" Ackerman; her daughter, Leslie Eichler (Michael); grandchildren, Christopher Eichler (Myrna), Lani Sullivan (Brian) and Logan Eichler (Shammy); as well as her 4 great-grandchildren, Braden Sullivan, Brison Sullivan, Linden Eichler and Mason Eichler. Rae was a long time member of St. James Episcopal Church, Daytona. A memorial service will be at St. Mary's Episcopal Church 216 Orange Ave. Daytona Beach on May 15th at 4:00pm and will be interred at the Jacksonville National Cemetery, Jacksonville, Florida.
