Based on her placement in this plot, I have assumed her maiden name to be Caldwell. She is next to siblings, Augustus L Caldwell and Harriet S. Caldwell Bates. She can be found on the 1850 US Census for Columbia, Richland, SC at age 10, enumerated as Mary F., living with (assumed) father Davis Caldwell, 51, and siblings Augustus L., 19 and Harriet S., 12. This would put her birth in 1840.
She can be found on the 1870 US Census for Ward 4, Columbia, Richland, SC at age 29 living with husband John S., 32, and children, Augusta, 8, and Harry, 4.
Conflict: On her headstone her middle name is spelled Frank as above. On her son Harry's death certificate found on FamilySearch.org, it states his mother was Frances Caldwell.
Found in the book, Record of Deaths in Columbia, South Carolina and elsewhere as recorded by John Glass, 1859-1877, by Brent Howard Holcomb, 1986, page 118: Mr's Bates, wife of Mr. John S. Bates, died in Col'a So. Ca. Nov'r 7, 1870. The writer did not know her, or rather does not remember her, since her girlhood....
Note: the back half of the Caldwell family plot is in Square 37, the front half is in Square 24.
