Esten Applen, Longtime Groceryman Here, Dies After Lingering Illness

Lime Springs Herald (IA) – December 30, 1965

Esten Applen, son of Henry and Hattie Applen, was born January 15, 1898 in York Township, Minn. He passed away Christmas morning, Dec. 25, 1965 at 7:30 o'clock at his home in Lime Springs after a lingering illness. He was age 67 years old, 11 months and 10 days.

Funeral services were held at the Saetersdal Lutheran Church, York Township, Monday afternoon, the Rev. E. E. Hoff officiating and burial was in the church cemetery. Organist was Mrs. Olaf Borgan who also accompanied Rev. E. E. Hoff who sang a solo. Pallbearers were Gerard Terbeest, Russell Arneson, Harold Ivers, Leland Johnson, Marvin Wesseling, and Roger Van DerHeyden. Zachow Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Applen was baptized at the Saedersdal Lutheran Church as a child, being confirmed April 1914 at Saetersdal.

On November 5th, 1924 he was married to Viola B. Latcham.

Two children were born to this union, a son Harold who passed away at the age of 4 years, and Alice (Mrs. Le Roy Schutte) of Lime Springs, and 1 grandchild Eugene.

The Applens farmed for the first 7 years after marriage, then Mr. Applen entered the grocery business at Lime Springs, engaging in this business for 27 years until he retired 11/2 years ago.

Preceding him in death were his parents.

Surviving him are his wife Viola, daughter Alice, and grandson Eugene and 7 sisters, Josie (Mrs. Marvin Jones), Agnes (Mrs. A. J. Dunlap), Clara (Mrs. W. E. Barker), Hazel (Mrs. George Stiles) of LeRoy, Minn., Gladys (Mrs. George Lovell), Geneva (Mrs. Orval Vickroy), Granger, Minn., and Mrs. Gurena Terbeest of Lime Springs, Minn.

Business firms of Lime Springs closed during the funeral in respect to a former business associate of long standing.
