John Stephens was the son of David and Lydia (Wagoner) Stephens. He married Maria D. Dininger on February 13, 1851. This union was blessed with two sons, William and Lewis C. and three daughters, Margaret, Sarah C., and Lydia E. After Maria passed away on August 15, 1865, John married Matilda (Finfrock) Risser. This union was blessed with two sons, John C. and Alva A., and one daughter, Clara.
