Margie was a bright little girl who, despite health problems, was head of her class from the day she entered school. She and her sister Nonie were boarding pupils at the North Carolina School for the Deaf in Morganton. In her death notice in the Deaf Carolinian, it was said: "Possessed of a brilliant mind, a lovable disposition, an unusually attractive personality, Margie was a great favorite with pupils, teachers, and officers."

Apparently Margie had suffered tuberculosis prior to her fatal illness; she became suddenly ill and rapidly developed pneumonia. Her father, her deaf sister, and two hearing sisters were with her when she died.
