Enlisted for the term of 1 year in the Marine on ship Alfred or Alpea, commanded by Capt Cotterson, under Commander Hopkins in January 1776. First six months on the Alfred and second 6 months on board the black Brig the 'Anda Rich' from Philadelphia. Discharged at Philadelphia in January 1777. Again enlisted for the term of 3 years in February 1777 as Orderly Sergent in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the company commanded by Captain Courtney of the Regiment commanded by Colonel Proctor in the line of the State of Pennsylvania on the continental Establishment. Served in the corps until January 1780, when he was discharged in Trenton, New Jersy. Was in the battle of Brandywine, Germantown, and Whiteplains. Pension application, S36404, National Archives. Age 81 years in May 1819.
"History of Perry County, pg 589. States that Richard Avitt bought property, Section 4, at Rome, Perry County in 1816."
Richard, Jr. may have been the first son as Andrew is believed to be the second son.
Death Date from "Historyof Perry county", pg 45.
May have been buried in Stephenson Cemetery, near Dexter, in Union township, PerryCounty, Indiana. Many years ago, during high river water, the Ohio river washed out aportion of the graves at the Rome, Indiana cemetery. Several caskets were found floating down the river. No one knows if he was buried in one cemetery without a marker or if
his coffin washed away in the river. The DAR thinks he may be buried in Groves Cemetery.
