Gladys Beard, 94, formerly of Buffalo, passed away Friday, July 6, 2012 in Athens where she had been living with her daughter Patsy for the past seven years. Visitation will be at 1 p.m., Monday, July 9, 2012, at First Baptist Church, Buffalo, TX, with funeral service to follow at 2 p.m. Interment will be Monday, July 9, 2012, at Evergreen Cemetery, in Percilla, Texas.

Gladys was born in Grapeland, Texas, to the late John Steven and Annie Lee Adams Shaw. She married Curtis Beard following World War II and had two daughters. She was a resident of Crockett until 1962 when she moved to Buffalo where she lived until moving to Athens. Gladys enjoyed various jobs including working in the nursery of the First Baptist Church of Buffalo, the Rainbow Cafe, and Weathervane Cafe. She also spent many years as a caregiver.

Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis; a daughter, Jessie Nell Beard; a great-granddaughter, Lauren Mikele Hayes; and brothers, Aubrey, Vernon, Steve, and Billy Shaw.

Survivors include her daughter, Patsy Stewart and husband, Garry, of Athens; granddaughter, Sandra Hayes, of Olympia, WA; great-grandchildren, Ryan Hayes and Courtney Kuykendall, of Olympia, WA; a sister, Velma Bugos and husband, Paul, of Iola; brother, Jimmy Shaw and wife, Gwen, of Crockett; as well as many other relatives and friends.
