A small stone pictured to the right is also carved "Mrs. Mary Chittendon - 1792" was a first stone carved for Mary, and then the larger, more complete stone was added.

Scituate Death Records state:
'wid. Chittenden, smallpox, 1792, Mary, wife of Capt. Isaac, Dec. 26, 53yrs.'

The name is spelled CHITTENDON and CHITTENDEN in early records.

Mary (Turner) was buried here due to her marriage connections to this JAMES family who owned this private Cemetery. Having died from smallpox, she was interred outside the wall which was customary in the day for "plague" victims, if not buried in a mass grave.

During the smallpox epidemic from 1791-93, the town of Scituate utilized the nearby James homestead for use as a hospital in which to isolate those who were stricken with small pox and those who chose to be immunized against it. Though the inoculation method was controversial at the time, there were only 12 deaths over two years out of a population of 2,862.

Mary (Turner) was a daughter of Capt. James Turner (1706-1776) and his wife Mary (Turner) (1704-1775), a cousin, who are both buried at Men of Kent Cemetery, Scituate, MA. In addition to daughter Mary, James and Mary Turner had children including a daughter Mehetable Turner, b.1743, Scituate, who in 4/1773 in Scituate married Gideon Chittenden, b.1749, Scituate, d.1799, Scituate, a son of Israel Chittenden, Jr. and Deborah (Vinal) of Scituate.

On 12/9/1779 in Scituate "Mary Turner of Scituate" m: widower "Capt. Isaac Chittenden of Malden", b.1714, Scituate, MA, d.1782, Malden, MA, son of Israell Chittenden and Mary (Pickles) of Scituate, MA, and a cousin of Gideon Chittenden who married Mary's sister, Mehetable (Turner). Capt. Isaac was widower of Persis (Finney) whom he married in 1744 in Scituate and who died in 1777 in Malden, MA, and with whom he had children. Capt. Isaac died intestate in 1782 in Malden, MA, and on 12/4/1782 "widow Mary Chittenden of Malden" signed a letter that went to the Probate Court at Cambridge to appoint her stepson Calvin Chittenden as Administrator "to transact business for me as I am not able to attend at present". Calvin submitted an Inventory of his father's Estate to the Court on 4/3/1783, and on 12/3/1783 the Court ruled that one-third part of the Estate, including land in Scituate, to be set off to widow Mary Chittenden for her said dower during her natural life, the remainder to be distributed to the children of said Isaac, deceased: Calvin Chittenden, Isaac Chittenden and Ann Sargeant".

The burial location for Capt. Isaac Chittenden is still undiscovered. It is most likely he was buried in Malden, MA near his first wife, Persis (Finney).

"Mary Chittenden of Malden, widow" signed her Will on 12/14/1792; it was recorded in Boston on 3/1793. She named/bequeathed her nieces and nephews who were children of her brother James Turner, and also children of her sister Mehetable (Turner) Chittenden who married Gideon Chittenden, and appointed her nephew Nathaniel Turner, son of James Turner, as her Executor; Mary did not name any children of her own, or her husband Isaac's children from his first marriage, but after Mary's death, in Cambridge Probate Court in 4/1796, Isaac's children, Isaac and Calvin Chittenden and Ann Sargeant, received Mary's one-third part share of their father's Estate. Capt. Isaac had property in Scituate as well as Malden, MA.

(NOTE: A third stone outside the wall next to Mary is for Thomas Holmes (1720-1792) (FAG#24215519), who also died of smallpox, father of Sarah (Holmes) (1750-1796) (FAG#49666758), wife of Benjamin James, Jr. (1744-1791) (FAG#49666729), of this JAMES family).

Other Chittenden/Turner/James connections:

Deacon Elisha James, b.1744, who 1st married Sarah (Foster) in 1773, Scituate, then 2nd married widow Mrs. Ruth (Foster) Chittenden in 1803, Scituate; Ruth was a sister of his first wife Sarah. Ruth had 1st married Nathaniel Chittenden, son of Israel and Mary (Pickels) Chittenden. Widow Mary (Pickels) Chittenden 2nd married Benjamin Turner and they had a son, Elisha Turner. Deacon Elisha James's sister, Prudence (James), married this Elisha Turner, his 2nd marriage, and they had a daughter Abigail (Turner). This Abigail Turner (FAG#24210674) in 1838 in Scituate married John James (FAG#24210722), a son of Benjamin James, Jr. (FAG#49666729) and Sarah (Holmes) (FAG#49666758) of Scituate.
