Resident of Pittsburg Gary Abono, passed away unexpectedly on February 18, 2009, at the age of the 56. He was a native and lifelong resident of Pittsburg. Gary graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1971. He then received his BA in communications from Sacramento State and his teaching credentials from St. Mary's College. For 32 years, Gary worked as a teacher, last working for the P.U.S.D at Riverside High School. He was a member of the California Teachers Association, Pittsburg Education Association, and Pittsburg Elks Lodge #1474. He was a high school basketball referee, a USSSA Umpire, and former Umpire Chief. Gary enjoyed all sports and was an avid L.A. Dodgers fan. He is greatest joy was his children and family gathering. Devoted father to his son Cecil and daughter Laura Abono. Loving son of Horace "Lefty" and Mary Abono; brothers John Abono (Diane) and Frank Abono (Barbara). Two nieces, Tangie and Tessa. Two nephews Alex and Dante. Mother-in-law Jay Brown and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife Tammie, brother Cecil, and father-in-law Tom Brown. Visitation will be held today February 24, 2009 at 5pm with a vigil at 7pm at the Church of the Good Shepherd. Funeral liturgy Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at 10:00am also at the Church of the Good Shepherd. Committal services following at Holy Cross Cemetery, Antioch.
