Jane Maude Abernethy met her husband in a most romantic way. It was a custom of young people to gather at the train station when the train came through, and once Maude met Harry Jenson, a young soldier from New York on a troop train during the Spanish American War. They started writing to one another; in 1899 Harry returned to Rutherford College and married Maude.

Mary had been a teacher, but traveled with her husband for some time before they returned to Rutherford College.
