James S. Burford, a 76-year-old pioneer of Union County, died this morning at the Grande Ronde hospital after a short illness. He was born on February 19, 1859, per the funeral card.
Mr. Burford crossed the plains to Oregon at the age of 17 years and has been a resident of Cove for the last 53 years. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge at Cove.
Survivors include six sons; William, Orphia, Frank, and Archie, all of Union: Arthur of Sandpoint, Ida., and Claude Burford, of Salem, and six daughters; Mrs. Vivian Mytinger of Pendleton; Mrs. Hazel Hartley of Cove; Mrs. Ruth Cockrell of Union; Mrs. Bina Vann and Mrs. Opal Gassett, of Cove, and Mrs. Leitha Parr of Everett, Wash.
Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church at Cove with Rev. Smits in charge of the services. Burial will take place at the family plot in the Cove Cemetery. Friends may view the body at the chapel of Walters Funeral Home.
