Here's the story of Ira's death that appeared on page 9 of the Grand Rapids Press on April 16 (my birthday), 1915. Note the mention of the brother Charles (Portland OR) and the son (living in Minnesota). Interesting that he's reported as single and not divorced.

I also searched the city directories and found him beginning in 1910 and living at various addresses through 1914. I searched for other Rices with the same address, but found none. So, maybe he never married??
1910 occupation sawyer for Grand Rapids Veneer; boards at 265 North Front Street
1911 occupation sawyer; boards at 183 South Front Street. This listing has Ira E Rice
1912 no listing
1913 occupation millwright; boards 1151 Front Street N.W.
1914 occupation sawyer; boards 1151 Front Street N.W.
1915 no listing

Funny, I looked on Seeking Michigan earlier, but did not turn up the death certificate. I finally got to it and parts of it make sense. The Grand Trunk line probably refers to the rail line that the box car was on in which he was found. That line ran through the NW side of Grand Rapids – probably his neighborhood (Front Street).

Again, not a "potter's field" within the cemetery, though some of the city's cemeteries had sections where the poor were buried. Records for these burials are very hard to come by, and finding a marker is rare. There are 20 graves in the lot, 10 east and 10 west. In order, here are the markers that are on the lot.

7 East 7 West
No marker Cornelius Tollenaar
No marker Janetue Tollenaar
Tjitze Bouma no marker (Your Ira)
Jitsche DeBoer Bouma Pauline Assenheimer
Helen Bouma Alice Ten Hoeve
Peter Bouma concrete marker – no name
Nellie Bouma Meringa no marker
William Vander Werf no marker
Joseph Vogel Alice Mackie
Albert Vogel Charles Mackie

If the records are correct and Ira is here, it may have been in a single open space, or perhaps the grave was given by one of these families, being a friend, neighbor or relative

work researched by Jim Meier, encompassing the time of the passing of Ira Rice, Tuesday, April 30, 2013, close to 200 years later. Though this appears not to be kin to me, I am including the very thorough research done by Mr. Meiers, with appreciation of work done and hoping that this effort will be able to help another find lost family.
