Ben H. Byrne, 83, a lifelong resident of Braxton County, WV, died Dec. 5, 2006, in the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center, Clarksburg, WV

Born Sept. 11, 1923, in Sutton, WV, he was a son of the late George Coble and Margaret Heater Byrne.

Also preceding him in death were a brother, John Maxwell Byrne, and a grandson, Jordan Mason Ellington.

He was a member of Hope Baptist Church, Frametown, WV, a UD Army veteran, serving as a staff sergeant during World War II, and retired owner of Byrne Hardware, Gassaway, where he had worked for 43 years. After retirement, he continued to work in area hardware stores in Braxton County.

He was a member of the American Legion, past president of Gassaway Lions Club and president of the Hardware Association of the Virginias. He was a graduate of Gassaway High School and was valedictorian of the class of 1941. He attended WVU where he received the highest GPA for chemical engineering in the class of 1943.

He is survived by his wife, Sheila G Byrne of Sutton; five sons, Michael and Timothy A Byrne of Charleston, WV, Jonathan Andrew Byrne of Gassaway, Charles Eric Byrne of Jane Lew and Jeffery David Byrne of Dallas, Texas; three daughters, Christina Nicole "Nikki" Byrne at home, Jennifer Susan Floyd of Buckhannon, WV, and Beth Groves Ellington of Beaverton, OR; and one sister, Margaret Mazza of Mount Vernon, OH. Also surviving are seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at Hope Baptist Church, Frametown, with the Rev. Rich Demastus officiating. Burial will be in Heaters Cemetery, Heaters, WV, with graveside rites being conducted by American Legion Post 33.
