Basil M. Burks, 69, Dies of injuries In Miami Beach

Basil M. Burks, 69, veeteran highway engineer for Hale County, died at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Miami Beach, FL., early Monday morning, August 29. Mr. Burks had been injured by an automobile on August 16 while attending the annual convention of the National Association of County Commissioners in the Florida city. He was walking across the street, in front of his hotel, during a driving rain when struck in the head by the rearview mirror of a passing automobile. He was carried to the Mt. Sinai Hospital in an unconscious condition, and died after lingering for almost two weeks.

Mr. Burks' death came as a shock to hundreds of friends throughout Alabama and the South, where he was recognized as a leading authority on highways. Born and reared in Tuscaloosa, he came to this county in the late 1930's as an engineer on the sub-marginal project in Northeast Hale, and then went with the county highway department in 1940. He served in the joint capacities of county superintendent of roads and highway engineer, and the system which he had a leading role in building became a model for the South. Visiting road experts often came to this county to consult with Mr. Burks and to study his program.
