Command Sgt. Maj. Kevin J. Griffin, 45, of Laramie, Wyo., died Aug. 8, in Sarkowi, in Kunar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when he encountered an insurgent who detonated a suicide vest. He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.

Kevin was born July 17, 1967, in Chicago to Rena (Sullivan) and Patrick Griffin. The family moved to Riverton in 1969, where Kevin grew up with his siblings and graduated from Riverton High School in 1985.
Following graduation, Kevin attended Northwest Community College in Powell and the University of Wyoming in Laramie. Excelling in sports, Kevin received numerous wrestling accolades both at the high school and collegiate level.
He met the love of his life while they were both attending Northwest Community College. They were married on Aug. 1, 1987, and recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.
Kevin leaves behind two wonderful children.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army on March 7, 1988. Kevin had a stellar military career of over 24 years, where he advanced to the position of Brigade Command Sergeant Major of the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, where he was killed in action in Afghanistan on Aug. 8.
CSM Griffin's awards and decorations include five Bronze Star Medals, a Purple Heart Medal, three Meritorious Service Medals, two Army Commendation Medals with Valor, four Army Commendation Medals, eight Army Achievement Medals, a Recruiting Badge (3 gold Sapphire), a Gold Recruiting Ring and the coveted Combat Action Badge, to name a few.
Kevin enjoyed being with friends and family, traveling and golfing. He believed in living life to the fullest.
He truly loved the military and his country, but above all he loved his family very much.
He is survived by his wife and daughter of Colorado Springs; a son stationed at Fort Hood, Texas; very close in-laws of Sheridan; two sisters, Calif.; three brothers, step-mother of Hudson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Swan Law Funeral Directors.
A service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Soldiers Memorial Chapel on the Fort Carson Army Base, with burial at 2:30 p.m. at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver.
