John Floyd Berner, 94, Neosho, died Monday, August 6, 2012, at Freeman West Hospital. He was born March 14, 1918, in Granby, MO, to Charles Arthur and Mary Onah (Powers) Berner.
Mr. Berner lived all of his life in Newton County and worked on the farm of his Dad's, until he was grown. He attended college at Pittsburg, Kansas and worked at the Nursery in Newtonia, MO, for $1.00 a day (hoeing and driving a team). He later worked in the lead and zinc mines of Eagle Picher in Stark City, MO and Wentworth, MO, until he got a job with Pet Milk in Neosho, MO, where he worked for 37 years before retiring.
John and Shirley Jean Elmore were married September 26, 1939, in Neosho, MO, and moved on a farm east of Shirley's dad's, living there until 1957, and later moving to 413 E. Hickory. They had two children, Sharon and Johnny.
John loved to fish and hunt. He could build and fix almost anything.
In addition to his wife and parents, John was preceded in death by a son, Johnny, in 1986.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Ted Prater, of Diamond, MO; two grandchildren, Teddra Prater and Michael Prater and wife, Nancy, of Muncie IN; and three great-grandchildren, Christopher, Audrey Mae and Mikel Anne Prater.
