Lucy (Madrid) Benavidez, 90, of las Vegas, New Mexico, died Thursday, April 14, 2005, at her home following a brief illness. She was born in La Manga to the late Ricardita (Dominquez) and Nicolas Madrid. She was married to Gonzalo Benavidez in 1935.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. She worked as a foster grandparent at West Las Vegas Head Start for 12 years.

She loved sewing, gardening, taking care of her plants, cooking, baking and being with her family and grandchildren.

She was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Nicolas and Ricardita Madrid; husband, Gonzalo Benavidez; son, Casey Benavidez; step-son, Fidel Benavidez; sisters, Floripa Lucero and Candelaria Jaramillo; and brothers, Juan and Cristobal Madrid:

She is survived by her sister, Elvira Hurtado of the family home in Las Vegas, N.M.; son, Manuel Benavidez and Margaret of Las Vegas, N.M.; step-son, Rafael Benavidez of Kansas; daughters, Clorinda Romero and husband, Joe, of El Pueblo, Lena Flores and husband, Paul; Jessie Archuleta and husband, Arthur, and Rose Salazar and husband, Joaquin, all of Las Vegas, N.M., and Helen Vargas and husband Gerardo of Romeroville; 38 grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
