He was a graduate of Bell High School where he was president of his graduating class. He received his B.S. Degree in Aeronautical Engineering from UCLA in 1966. He was a member of ROTC and took his flight training at Webb Air Force Base in Big Spring, Texas. There he met and was engaged to Nancy Sessions of Big Spring. They were to be married upon the completion of this tour on April 4, 1969 at the Reese AFB Chapel in Lubbock, Texas.
He was killed on a malfunction of his aircraft upon take-off. The F-4 Phantom aircraft crashed and killed Capt Burge. His aircraft had been shot up on two previous missions, but he was able to return unscathed.
