John James Arthur Cobain was a sheriff's deputy and jailer in the 1930s when this was Chehalis Co. he was shot with his own automatic, supposedly an accident, during the time Jeff Bartell was sheriff. [ from the Montesano Vidette: Accident Kills Deputy: Friends here were shocked last Thursday night to learn that Arthur Cobain, well known and popular deputy sheriff, had been killed accidentally, when his gun fell from his pocket to the floor of a Markham store, where he was seated on a stool at the counter.::] the family knew that Art was always very careful with firearms and never kept a round in the chamber. the 2 other officers seated with him said it was an accident. the years that Jeff Bartell was sheriff were a very dangerous time. also shot was chief detective, Carlton Stearns in 1936. the deaths were forgotten for 73 years until I brought them to light. the Grays Harbor County sheriff's office had no records of these deputies clear up to 2012, when I researched them. the Grays Harbor Co Sheriff's Dept has now honored these fallen officers as has the Washington State Officer Line of Duty Deaths, his name is on the memorial wall in Olympia, WA, and also the National Officer Down memorial in DC. Art was the great grandfather of Kurt. Copies for the Cobain family only.
