U.S. Senator. Educated at Bradford Academy, Massachusetts, he then engaged in mercantile pursuits in Strafford, New Hampshire, (1826 to 1856). Entering politics, he was a member of the New Hampshire State House of Representatives and judge of probate of Strafford County, (1841 to 1845). In 1845, he was appointed as a Democrat to the United States Senate, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Levi Woodbury, serving until 1846. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed his previous business interests. In 1861, he was nominated for Governor of New Hampshire, but withdrew, moved to Ohio, where he engaged in lumbering and banking until his death.
