James Monroe Bonner was born Mar. 8th 1821 in Putnam county, Georgia to Thomas M. and Nancy Bonner. James and his brother-in-law, William H Haley,also a CSA soldier, owned a plantation in Putnam County, Georgia prior to the war for Southern Independence.
James married Elizabeth Haley on Nov. 6th, 1845. They had 7 children. James was a Private in Company H 5th. Georgia Infantry, CSA, under the command of Brigadier General Pleasant J. Phillips. Although Gen. Phillips orders were not to make contact with the Union troops, he decided since he out numbered them by almost 3-1, he would attack. Unfortunately the Union troops were armed with Spencer repeating rifles and the Confederate forces were slaughtered. James Monroe Bonner was killed on Nov. 24th, 1864 in the Battle of Griswoldville, east of Macon,Ga. Spencer B. King mentions his death in the book, "Sound of Drums."
James is buried in the Haley family cemetery, 1200 ft. east of Pinkerton Road, Putnam County, Georgia, in a wooded area. His grave marker reads: J.M.BONNER, CO H 5th GA INF, CSA.
