The beloved husband of the late Dolly Bannon passed away on Sunday morning in Vacaville with family and longtime companion, Joyce Danis at his side. Marty was born the youngest of five siblings in Pittsburgh, Pa., the son of Michael and Margaret Bannon. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dolly, of forty-one years. Marty will be remembered by his three sons, Edward, Martin and
Christopher and eight grandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews. Marty will also be missed by his elder sister, Mary Lannis of Linwood, N.J. In addition, Uncle Marty maintained a special connection to his many nieces and nephews and is fondly remembered as their favorite uncle to visit as he traveled the world.
As a young man, Marty enjoyed the fast life of a fun-loving young man during the era of jazz and big bands; developing a love for dancing and the music that he continued to enjoy throughout his life. As an avid sportsman, Marty continued to participate in many sports throughout his life, passing this interest to his sons. Of note is his particular success in coaching, having won multiple sport championships in baseball, football, table tennis, boxing, basketball and later in life he also enjoyed participating in distance running and swimming.
Marty served in the Army Air Corp during WWII. While assigned to England he contributed to the effort as an armaments specialist on P-47s. Marty often recalled his D-day experience where his unit played a significant role. After a short break following the war, Marty returned to the Air Force and served until 1972, retiring as a chief master sergeant. His assignments included flying duties with the famed "Hurricane Hunters" during the unit's formation, conducting numerous missions into the eye of tropical storms and later conducting classified missions over the North Pole during the Cold War. His duty assignments included stays in Japan, Philippines, Korea, Vietnam, Germany, Greenland, Bermuda, Florida, Texas, Nevada and many tours in California.
Following his distinguished Air Force career, Marty retired and he and Dolly moved to Vacaville, where his three sons attended local universities. Marty simultaneously embarked on his own efforts to complete his college degree, culminating in graduation from California State University, Sacramento, in 1978 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History with honors. He maintained his keen interest in history along with a passion for reading, politics, sports, travel and the arts throughout his life.
Marty was dedicated to his family and especially proud of his children's many accomplishments while maintaining a special love for his grandchildren, Patrick, Kimberly, Shaun, Martina, Megan, Sean, Chris, and Tess. He held a special pride in his Irish heritage that he passed to his family and they are sure St. Patrick will look kindly on Marty this day.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects Thursday, March 17, from 9 to 11 a.m., at Vaca Hills Chapel on Elmira Road. A military interment will follow immediately at Sunrise Cemetery in Vallejo at noon.
Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the American Veterans organization of donor's choice.
