HARRIET SMITH ADAMS BURLINGTON - Harriet Smith Adams, of Burlington, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, Oct. 17, 2009, at the age of 100. Harriet was a loving mother, grandmother, wife, and friend. Born Jan. 22, 1909, in Burlington, daughter of Eugene and Madge Smith of Burlington, she was predeceased by her husband Harry G. Adams in 1990. Harriet is survived by her son Paul Adams of Shelburne, daughter-in-law Bonnie Adams of Jeffersonville, granddaughter Ashley Adams of Burlington, and several nieces and nephews. Harriet grew up in Burlington where she attended Burlington High School. She moved to New York City shortly thereafter to pursue a career in dance at the Capitol Theater in the late 1920s where she worked for eight years until marrying. She worked for many years as Administrator at the Durfey Clinic at the Mary Fletcher hospital. Harriet was an active member of the Burlington community, was a longtime member of a Burlington Home Dem group, and was an avid birder and gardener. Throughout her life, Harriet pursued her interest in learning about other cultures, and strived to stay abreast of current events, both locally and globally. Harriet will be most remembered by her family for her exceptionally positive outlook and her zest for life. One could not spend time with Harriet without being uplifted by her warmth, her cheery nature, and her generosity of spirit. She will be deeply missed. A memorial service will be held at Corbin & Palmer 71 South Union St. Burlington, at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Committee on Temporary Shelter (COTS), P.O. Box 1616, Burlington, VT 05402.
