Steve Preston

December 27, 1915 - July 16, 2012

SALEM - Steve Preston passed away in the presence of family on July 16, 2012, from complications of an abdominal tumor. He was born to immigrant Ukrainian parents Onofrey Perepelycia and Annie (Marchyshyn) Perepelycia in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada as Steve Perepelycia. As an adult, he and his brothers changed their last name to Preston. It was not the custom of his parents to give their children middle names.

Steve married Jean Grace Wyard in Canada in 1941. They had one son, Robert Stephen Preston. Steve served in the Canadian Air Force during WWII, earning rank as Sergeant. In his younger years he had a band that played at dances and on the radio. He played the violin and mandolin. He took up painting later in life and did beautiful seascapes and mountain scenes. He and Jean moved to Southern California in the mid 1940s where he eventually took up barbering. He was a master barber, running several barber shops and beauty shops, as Jean was a beautician. In his later years he took up real estate for a time. Upon retirement, Jean continued working as the head of a beauty college, and he stayed home doing the cooking and gardening, which he loved. He was quite the cook, especially soups and he was always the tossed salad maker for family gatherings. You never were to wash the wooden salad bowl he used for his salads. We would tease him that we would put it in the dishwasher!

Steve and Jean moved to Salem in 1999 to be near their family. Jean passed away in 2001, just after celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. He was the last surviving sibling. His brothers, Alex, Mark, Jack and Harry and sister Irene all preceded him in death, as did his parents. He is survived by his son Robert (Chris), grandchildren Steve (Esther), Kelly (Preston) Stevens (David), 7 great grandchildren, one great-great grandson, one sister-in-law and several nieces and nephews.

Steve loved his family and enjoyed visits with them and friends. He always had a story to tell about the things he did in his life. He was thankful for the care given him by those at Willamette Valley Hospice. He so enjoyed his time as a resident of the Springs at Sunnyview and looked forward to the special meals they served.

A memorial service will be held for Steve at Willamette Valley Baptist Church, 650 N. 1st St., Aumsville, OR, on Saturday, July 28 at 2PM.
