Oliver James Maddix, Jr. was the third and last child born to Maggie Mae Mitchell and Oliver James Maddix, Sr., in Etowah County, AL. He was their only son, his two sisters arriving before him. His father was nicknamed "Sandy" so it was assumed that he would be called Oliver, but, before that could happen his daddy called him "Buddy". He was always called "Buddy" within the family.

Margaret went to stay with Grandma Mitchell. In 1930 Buddy is living in his grandmother Maddix's (now Bowlings) home with his sister Mary Jo, his Dad O J Sr., his aunt Wiley "Shug" and five of his fathers half-siblings. He is still there in 1931. His daddy is a fireman and Buddy loves the firetrucks.
Within a few years time, Oliver Sr. met and married Vera Lee Albright. She was to become the step-mother to his children. Vera had never any other children.
During the early and mid 1930's Buddy, his Dad, step-mom and Mary Jo lived in rural Etowah County.The family home in 1940 of O J Sr., Vera, Margaret, Buddy and his cousin, Catherine, was on Center Road in the Hollis District. His sister Mary Jo is already married and out of the house.
Buddy was a seriously mischievious toddler. He always wandered off, so when his mom was doing chores he was tethered to the clothesline post to prevent his becoming lost. As he grew older his sisters helped care-take him. One Sunday, when they were supposed to be with him in church, they took him, dropped him off, and the sisters went swimming. Buddy decided that he didn't need to be at church either, and he walked home. Completely unmonitored, he made it home before his sisters ever made it back to the church.
As he got older it was decided that the service was the place for him. He joined the Navy on June 27, 1945, at the end of the war. He was 18 years old. He was released from Navy service on Aug 8,1946. During the time he was in the Navy his sister Margaret had moved to Texas, followed by his sister Mary Jo.
When Buddy was released from the service he chose to go to Texas, as his sisters and their husbands were all gainfully employed and there was work available. The Navy had established that Orange Texas would be one of eight locations in which reserve vessels would be stored at the end of the war. The location was good, mainly due to the fresh water supply of the Sabine River which prevented saltwater corrosion. In November of 1945 a Naval base and 12 piers were constructed.*
Buddy married Elizabeth Faye Johnson and went to work providing for his family. In 1953, Sherry Beth, the first of their five children were born he while working as a layout helper at the shipyard. Their home was at 1108 Avenue C. In total, there were 3 daughters and 2 sons born. Surviving only one day, James Michael was born on July 1954. In 1955 they lived at 202 Murray Court and he worked for C W Steel, which was contracted by the Navy.
On January 4, 1956 his father, Oliver James Maddix, Sr. died in Defuniak Springs, FL. In March of 1956 Buddy's son Michael was born. They moved to Beaumont Texas for a short while, lived at 2162 7th Street, but moved back to Orange, lving on Turret Road before moving to 1021 Irving in West Orange. His next child, Rachael Lynn, was born in 1959, followed by Nita Fay in 1962. They lived in Hartburg for a number of years. It was a rural area and he and Beth hosted many family gatherings. By 1970 he and Beth were divorced. When he was 42 years old he married Patrica Ruth Nation on June 28, 1971, but they were divorced on May 18, 1972 and had no children.
He remained very close to his sisters and step-mother. He lived with Vera sometime between 1980 and 1990 and until the time of Vera's death in January of 1996 he spent many hours in her home in Defuniak Springs, FL.
At the time of his death his home was in Mauriceville, Orange County, Texas.
