Mrs. Elizabeth Baker, widow of the late Rev. W.J. Baker died Wednesday morning at 8:20 at the home of her grandson, Mr. J. J. Arnold in Tifton. She was 86 years old.
Mrs. Baker was a Miss Jenkins, of Laurens county, and was married there about sixty years ago. She was a devout Christian, and a member of the Baptist church for forty years. She was laid to rest in New River cemetery, Friday afternoon, Rev. John A. Cox conducting the funeral services.
Mrs. Baker is survived by six children. Three sons, J.J. Baker of Tifton, W. M. Baker of Tifton and Jourdan Baker, of Oxford, Ga.. Three daughters, Mrs. N. A. Arnold, of Ocilla, Mrs. A. B. Cribb, of Waycross, and Mrs. C. E. Taylor, of Tifton
Elizabeth Baker has a CSA pension application on line under Tift County. She says she married W. J. Baker in Laurens Co., GA. Though she could not remember his military unit, her witness said that they enlisted in Dublin, GA in 1861 and served 6 months with Co. I of the 2nd GA State Troops. A second witness said that the reason Mr. W. J. Baker did not return after his 6 months , was he had rheumatism and had been called to pastor a church in Laurens County.
