He was born in Florence, South Carolina, a son Elijah B. Peterson and Janie Alexander. He attended the public schools of Florence County. At an early age, he joined Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three children and four siblings.
Survivors are: seven daughters, Annie P. (Leroy) Smith, Mary McIver, Vivian Pee Wee Jackson, Gal Peterson, Gloria Jean Murray, Crystal Alexander and Tyra A. Greene; 23 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; two sisters, Elease (Frank) Williams and Evelyn (Dwelly) Davis; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
