Born on May 15, 1911, in Frostburg, she was the daughter of the late Annie Agnes (Kirby) and Bernard D. Dilley. She also was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ralph P. Bender, in 1998; her sister, Angela Dilley Arnold; and her brother, John B. Dilley.
She is survived by one brother, Francis D. Dilley, Bethesda; one son, Ralph P. Bender Jr., Frostburg; three daughters, Frances Celine Kropff and her husband Ernest, Silver Spring, Catherine B. Abbott and her husband Allan, Taneytown, Martha J. Lashbaugh and her husband William F., Jr., Eckhart; and her sister-in-law, Madelyn Thomas and her husband William, and their son Douglas, Frostburg.
She also is survived by eight grandchildren, John, Michael and Liana Kropff, Juliana Abbott Gehr, Alana Abbott Smith and Mary Edith Abbott Blubaugh, Ellen Lashbaugh Kitzmiller and William W. Lashbaugh III; and five great-grandchildren, Dylan Smith, Madison Gehr, Brant T. and Gregory Kitzmiller, and Macy Lashbaugh.
Mrs. Bender was a retired school teacher who attended State Normal School and graduated from Frostburg State College and began her career at Piney Plains School. She held teaching positions at Cresaptown, and Beall Elementary and Junior High School in Frostburg. She was a member of St. Michael¹s Catholic Church, and St. Michael¹s Choir and Sodality; Maryland Retired Teachers Association; and Allegany County Retired Teachers Association. She also volunteered at the Frostburg Museum and at St. Michael¹s Catholic Church.
Friends will be received at the Sowers Funeral Home, P.A., 60 W. Main St., Frostburg, from 2 to 4 on Sunday afternoon. Prayers will be recited at 3:30 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. William E. Moody at St. Michael¹s Catholic Church in Frostburg on Monday at 11 a.m.
Interment will be in St. Michael¹s Cemetery following the Mass.
The family would like to thank the staff of St. Vincent de Paul for the loving care, respect and concern they provided during the years Mrs. Bender was in their care.
