Mrs. Evelyn Mitchell Abernathy, 84, former resident of Columbia, died Wednesday, November 24, 2004 at her residence in Huntsville, Alabama. The family will visit with friends Friday from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the residence in Huntsville.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Pleasant Mount Cumberland Presbyterian Church with Rev. Wendell Trotter and Rev. Bob Phelps officiating. Burial will be in the Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Saturday from 12:30 p.m. until service time at the church. Oakes & Nichols Funeral Directors in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Pleasant Mount Cemetery Association, c/o John Park, Treasurer, 2282 Rick Hight Road, Columbia, 38401. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com.

The Maury County native was the daughter of the late Marshall Inman Mitchell and Editha Denham Mitchell. She made her home in Huntsville since 1967 and remained there following the death of her husband, Floyd Wesley Abernathy, in 1986. Mrs. Abernathy was supervisor in the Columbia and Huntsville offices of Central Service Association, retiring in 1984 after 32 years with the company.

She was a member of Christ Church in Monrovia, Alabama and previously held membership in the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Huntsville and Columbia. She was recognized in 2002 by the Cumberland Presbyterian Women's Organization with the Golden Patron of Missons Certificate of Recognition for her years of service to the church.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Lora Abernathy of Huntsville; three grandchildren, Mary Martha Abernathy, Doug Abernathy and Daniel Abernathy; a brother, Harry Mitchell of Columbia.

Pallbearers are John Park, Jerry Park, James W. Upshaw, Michael E. Gilmer, Keith Faulkner, Charles Martin and Tom Keene.
