As the story goes: Reverend Andy Toler was one of the first settlers in this remote mountainous part of WVa, which was originally Virginia. Andy would ride his horse to church and take a giant swig of moonshine from a jug in his saddle bags. They say he would preach so loud, that you could hear him in the next county. He was not only a preacher, but a doctor, lawyer, judge, timber man, & farmer. He would take his pay, or fees, in cattle, hogs, sheep, moonshine whiskey or any form of supplies.

Also served in the Civil War as 1st Sergeant, Confederate.
Enlisted in Company B, Virginia 45th Infantry Battalion on 01 May 1863.

He married Martha Hatfield on Sep 20, 1858 when he was 23 years old. They had 6 children.

Lived on Ben's Creek Rd, later on the "Left" Fork Bens Creek in the Stafford District of Mingo County, WV (formerly Logan County until 1895 and Virginia until 1863)

After Mattie's death, Andy married an unwed mother, Nettie Brookshire on Dec 15, 1892 and had 5 more children with her.

Stone says birth year 1835. Civil War records transcribed as 1836. Marriage record confirms 1835. Family docs also note 1835.
