Mary was born in South Carolina to James F and E S [maiden name unknown] Rochester. By 1860, her father had moved the family to the Northern district of Clayton County, Georgia. Her parents died before 1870. By 1870, the orphaned children were in Fayette County. George was residing with the Lord family (Jordan Lord, Sarah Lord, and daughters Emily and Sarah M) and Mary was residing with the Norton family (Silas, Frances, and son Obadiah). It's believed that she also stayed for awhile with the Bottoms family. Mary's sister M J has not been found in the 1870 Federal Census.

On December 30, 1877, she married George R Lord in Fayette County, Georgia. They have at least four children: 2 boys and 2 girls.

George and Mary were farmers. In 1930, she was a widow residing on a farm in the vicinity of Black Rock, Fayette County, Georgia, with her son Arthur and grandson Wilbur.
