Frank Vomacka was born June 5, 1919 at Lynch, Nebraska, the ninth child of eleven children born to the family of Frank and Anna (Herma) Vomacka. Frank finished his schooling at Lynch and was working with his father on the farm when World War II started.
He was drafted into the Army on March 2, 1942 and received basic training at Ft. Lewis, WA and was further trained as an operator of heavy construction equipment at Ft. Belvoir, VA. He was assigned to the 2729th Engineer Company and transferred to the Northwest Territories of Canada where he engaged in all types of construction. He was in Canada for 18 months. His unit was then shipped to Europe where they fought their way through France, Belgium and into Germany. After the German surrender in 1945 his unit was transferred through the Panama Canal to the Philippine Islands where Frank operated the large dock cranes at the ocean ports. When Japan surrendered he was discharged on 24th of December, 1945. Frank was very proud of his service to America during these years.
Upon his return to America he began farming. Machinery was hard to come by but Frank managed through hard work to farm north of Winner for 6 years and also farmed land in Gregory County at the same time. During these early years Frank enjoyed fishing, pheasant and deer hunting.
Frank and Mable Stanek were married on June 30, 1952 at the Catholic Church in Paxton, SD. Four boys were born to this union: Sherman, Gary, Mark and Scott. The family bought a farm 1 ½ miles west of Gregory on Highway 18. They expanded this farm and in addition did custom work for the neighbors. Frank prided himself on his ability to manage the farm, taking exceptional care of his equipment and the land. He built dams and shelterbelts which his grandchildren enjoyed for fishing and hunting.
Frank's community affiliations were with the Gregory Elevator Board, the rural telephone board, the Gregory County Weed Board for 35 years, the FmHA Board, the Gregory American Legion and Burke VFW. He enjoyed restoring antique tractors in his retirement years and he and Mable enjoyed some travel together. Being a regular for coffee at the Cenex was important to Frank in his later years.
He passed away on June 26, 2012 at the Gregory Hospital at the age of 93 years.

Funeral services for Frank Vomacka were held Saturday, June 30, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at the Berean Church in Gregory with Pastor Scott McClellen officiating. A prayer service was held Friday night at Kotrba-Smith Funeral Home.
Music was provided by Geoff Smith, soloist, singing "One Day at a Time" and "On the Wings of a Dove" accompanied by Janeen Hlavka, pianist. Congregational hymns were "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art."
Rosie Smith was in charge of registration and Kary Vomacka was flower attendant.
Casket Bearers were Sherman Vomacka, Mark Vomacka, Scott Vomacka, Gary Vomacka, Aaron Vomacka, and Kevin Sundquist.
Military honors were conferred by the Gregory American Legion and the Burke VFW.
