A California Pioneer and a Donner Party survivor. The eldest son of Jacob Donner and Elizabeth Blue Hook. In April 1846, his father, Uncle George and James F. Reed set out for California with their families. This is what was to become the Donner Party. The wagon train was trapped by snow in the Sierra Nevada near what is now Donner Lake. Of the nine members of Donner family, only three children survived the winter. George, his sister Mary and their half-brother Solomon Hook. On 8 June 1862 George Donner Jr. married Margaret Watson in San Jose, California. They had eight children. Lying next to George is his son Albert. George's sister Mary Donner Houghton is also interred near by. (bio by: Joel Farringer)

Attached is an obit (source Press Democrat, Santa Rosa, 2-21-1874) confirming George Donner died February 16, 1874. It is so bizarre that he was enumerated in the 1900 census with his widow (although in 1880 she correctly stated her marital status as widow). Can't imagine why. Feel free to add the obit info on the memorial, with the following citation: California Digital Newspaper Collection, Center for Bibliographic Studies and Research, University of California, Riverside.
