DOVER — Louise L. Downing, 87, of Florence Street, widow of E. Clyde Downing, died March 31, 2008 at St. Ann Home.

Born in Dover on Jan. 10, 1921, she was the daughter of Alfred J. and Florence (St. Jacques) Lagasse. She was educated in local schools. During World War II she was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. During the early 1950s she was a volunteer for the local chapter of the American Red Cross and participated in the initial Salk Vaccine Inoculation program against polio.

Louise was a 30-plus year employee of the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, a member of the hospital's "Diamond Circle" retiring in 1995. She was past president and an honorary member of the Ladies of the United Commercial Traveler's, Council 195 of Manchester.

She and her late husband were instrumental in establishing Great Bay School and Training Center in Newington and was an honorary member of the Great Bay Association and a member of the A.A.R.P.

She is survived by her son, Ernest C. Downing of Dover, his fiancée Darlene Severance of Rochester, two brothers Robert E. Lagasse of Canovanas, Puerto Rico, and Leo P. Lagasse of Rochester, and nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband her siblings Blanche Brewster, Antoinette Lapine and Frederick Lagasse predeceased her.

Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., where friends may call from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery.
