Ray was the son of James and Pearl Mayo Cavenaugh. His mother married several times, and he had several half-siblings.

He grew up in Pennsylvania, and spent most of his adult life in Pittsburgh. He worked as a laborer, brakeman on the railroad, salesman and cabbie. Ray was a member of the Teamsters Union. He was married to a woman named Mary, and they had a child, Doris in 1915. By 1930 they had broken up, and Ray is seen on the Federal Census for that year living with his mother, stepfather and half brother.

Rayfield was a personable, quiet, considerate man. He married Dorothy Elizabeth Smith Wright~~the exact year is unknown. They both lived together in a home they built and named "Rayhaven" in the hills of Clinton, Pennsylvania. By the end of the 1960s they even installed running water!

Dot and Ray were devoted to each other, and found happiness together. The many loving birthday and Valentine's Day cards Ray gave Dot {which she saved} attest to his affections. They lived a true love story.

Ray died 11 years before Dot, and she moved to Wisconsin to be close to her daughter, Marilyn. After Dot died, she and Rayfield were finally reunited and repose together near the Wisconsin bluffs and the Mississippi River.
