Joseph served 8Aug1862-1Jun1865 CIV WAR, Co K 111th Regt Ill Volunteers; descrip 5'9", light complexion, blue eyes, light hair. Mustered into service 18 Sept 1862 at Camp Marshall, Discharged at Washington DC 7 June 1865. Joseph was wounded in action at Resaca Georgia on May 14, 1864. "A ball passing through his body, entering just below the breast bone and passing out on the right side, breaking one rib so affecting him that he is unable to perform any manual labor requiring strength or exercise." attesting for him were his brother Stephen Branch and the brother in law of Samuel Branch, James Scott. (claim cert 73257). At time of death in 1924 Joseph received a pension of $50 per month. He was confined to the hospital three months. The bullet which pierced Mr. Branch passed through eleven folds of his rubber blanket before entering his body. It lodged in his back, from which place it was removed and is now in his possession... He participated in the grand review at Washington DC.  (In 1974 Chic Hundeby of Beardsley MINN, great grandson of Joseph Branch, said he had the bullet.)
an affidavit dated 1913 in Levi BRANCH's pension papers from his brother Joseph BRANCH stating that Joseph has in his possession the Branch family Bible with all the record of births.

He made the first track from Beardsley to Browns Valley.
Browns Valley twp organized and first election held at Joseph Branch home, also school election, first Sunday School and Bible reading class. In 1904 he owned 320 acres w/improvements. The county remained unorganized until 1881, when an act of the Legislature declared it organized. He donated the land for Beardsley Cemetery.
In 1924 Joseph said he had five grandchildren, two of the boys being quite prominent in the newspaper business. Date of death 9 Oct 1924, age 83, cause of death bronchial Pneumonia.
