United States Army General. He graduated from the Military Academy in May 1861 and was commissioned an officer in the Artillery Corps, During the Civil War, he served with the Battalion of Engineers at Gettysburg, as an engineer of Army Corps in the siege of Atlanta, supervised the defenses at Nashville and was promoted Lieutenant Colonel for his gallant services in December 1864. After the war, he was General Sheridan's Chief Engineer in the Military Division of the Missouri and was promoted Colonel in 1874. From 1875 to 1883, he engineered the defenses of Long Island Sound and executed harbor improvements in northern Wisconsin and Michigan. In 1892, he was appointed senior American member of the International Commission to Mexico, serving until 1896. In 1898, he served as the Northwest Division Engineer and was commissioned Brigadier General, Chief of Army Engineers in 1901, serving until retired.
