After the war ended my mother and I went back to Sioux City. I think my dad must have had another two or three years to serve in his enlistment. So we went to live with my grandfather and grandmother who had bought a house in Morningside. My granddad used to take me in the horse and buggy and I can remember I used to help him pick up black walnuts from a tree he had in his yard.
My grandfather was English, born in Old Town, Maine, February 5, 1945. He and my grandmother had 5 sons and 4 daughters.
I remember that my grandfather really enjoyed having me with him during that period of time and my grandmother was always good to me. I used to go out and pick her berries and grapes before she had a chance to get to them to make jelly but she never scolded me. She always had sweetpeas growing in her back yard and I always think of her whenever I smell them. One time my mother was going to pick cherries somewhere with one of her sisters. I raised a big stink because I couldn't go along. My grandmother diverted my attention by having me go to a neighbor's yard to pick dandelions.
By the way, my grandfather's name was Nelson Porter (strictly English) and my Grandmother was Mary Potter (strictly Scotch-Irish)
